Conferences

are held twice a year. A residential conference in July and a one-day conference the following January are organized around a theme proposed by the Society's President.

The conferences for 2010-11 will be on the theme of THE CHURCH AND LITERATURE, under the presidency of Dr Sheridan Gilley (University of Durham). For a description of the theme and a list of the main speakers, click here.

The Summer Conference will be held at the University of St Andrews, from 21-24 July 2010. It will begin at 4 pm on the Wednesday and conclude with breakfast on the Saturday, an optional day excursion being arranged on that day.

  • We welcome proposals for communications (20 minutes maximum) related to the theme. To register to present a communication, please complete the proposal form and return it by 1 April 2010 to the Assistant Editor, Dr Tim Grass, 21 Laughton Rd, Horsham, West Sussex, RH12 4EJ; e-mail: grass.family@tesco.net. This must be done even if you intend also to apply for a conference bursary. Timetables will be sent to all who submit proposals, when arrangements have been completed. Papers given at the conference are eligible to be considered for inclusion in Studies in Church History, vol. 48, but the fact that a communication is accepted for delivery at the conference is no guarantee of publication. NB: Membership of the Society is a requirement for all speakers at the Society's conferences.
  • Booking forms for the conference will be available on the website shortly and will also be sent out with the Spring Newsletter in March.

EHS Conference Bursaries: The Society offers a number of conference bursaries to postgraduate members who have had communications accepted by the Editors for presentation at the Summer Conference. Applications should be made using the bursary form, and returned to the Editors by 1 May 2010.

Anglo-Catholic History Society Bursary: A single bursary for the Summer Conference may be funded by the Anglo-Catholic History Society for a communication on a topic in keeping with that Society’s interests. The application process is the same as for the EHS bursaries.

Michael Kennedy Prize: The Society awards an annual prize of £150 for the best postgraduate communication given at the Summer Conference. This is chosen after the conference by the President and the Editors of Studies in Church History.

The Winter Meeting will be held in London on 8 January 2011.

Provisional dates for future Summer Conferences and Winter Meetings

2011: 7 January, London; 17-20 August, Oxford (NB: note the change of month)

2012: 12 January, London; 18-21 July, Bangor, Wales

2013: 17-20 July

EHS Postgraduate Colloquium, University of Manchester, 13 March 2010

On behalf of the Committee of the Ecclesiastical History Society, we invite research student members – or prospective members – of the EHS to the next Postgraduate Colloquium on the History of Christianity, to be held at the University of Manchester on Saturday 13 March 2010. This has traditionally been an informal opportunity for students to get to know one another and to learn about each other’s work, and the papers are at least as interesting as those at the main conference! We would welcome offers of twenty-minute papers (on any topic in the history of Christianity).  This will be followed by ten minutes for questions and discussion. Please contact Geordan Hammond, ghammond@nazarene.ac.uk. It would be helpful if you could send your name, department, institution, supervisor’s name, and proposed title to Geordan by 1 February 2010. We look forward to seeing you in Manchester.
